North Wales Police fitness instructor runs 101 miles for veterans’ charity

A North Wales Police staff member and former RAF veteran has completed a 101-hour endurance challenge to raise money for a veterans’ charity.
Gareth Shilton, the Force Physical Training Instructor, ran one mile every hour for 101 hours between North Wales Police Headquarters in Colwyn Bay and nearby Eirias Park.
Project 101 aimed to raise funds for Woody’s Lodge, a social hub that supports veterans and their families. The charity has several centres across Wales, including one at Eirias Park.
Gareth said: “Back in 2020 I completed the Shoggins Challenge for Combat Stress; inspired by David Goggins’ 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. I reimagined it as one mile every hour for 48 hours, with an extra mile every 24 hours completed – plus one for the Queen. That totalled 51 miles in 48 hours so I thought now is the time to double it, and Project 101 was born.
“I’ve completed a total of 105 miles – the equivalent of 4 complete marathons and I even did part of the challenge wearing Halloween costumes. This isn’t just about endurance – it’s about resilience, remembrance and raising vital funds for Woody’s Lodge who provide crucial support for those who have served.”
Deputy Chief Constable Nigel Harrison said: “Gareth’s determination and resilience is incredible and I, on behalf of the whole force would like to congratulate him on completing this fantastic challenge.”
Gareth began his run at 19:01hrs on Wednesday 29 October and crossed the finish line in the early hours of Monday 3 November.
