HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has reminded Self Assessment customers that there are 100 days left to file their 2024 to 2025 tax return and pay any tax owed before the 31 January 2026 deadline.

More than 3.5 million people have already filed their tax return for the year. HMRC is encouraging those yet to do so to file early, giving them time to check details and prepare for payment.

Last year, more than 97 per cent of tax returns were submitted online. Returns can be completed on GOV.UK, where a range of guidance is available to help customers prepare and submit their information.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said:
“With 100 days to the Self Assessment deadline, now is the time to get started. Completing your return now means you know how much tax you need to pay ahead of the deadline. We are here to help with lots of help and advice, just search ‘file a tax return’ on GOV.UK to find out more.”

People who have sold assets such as shares since 30 October 2024 are advised to check updated Capital Gains Tax rates, as the Self Assessment system will not automatically calculate at the new rates. An adjustment calculator is available on GOV.UK.

HMRC has also launched a new High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) PAYE digital service, allowing some Child Benefit claimants to pay through their tax code rather than completing a full Self Assessment return. Eligible customers can call HMRC to de-register before the filing deadline.

Paper returns must be submitted by 31 October 2025, while online returns have until 31 January 2026. HMRC advises customers to be alert to scams and never share login details, even with tax agents.

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with annual turnover above £50,000 will be required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, submitting quarterly summaries to HMRC. Customers are encouraged to join testing programmes now to familiarise themselves with the system.

HMRC’s app allows users to register for Self Assessment, check their Unique Taxpayer Reference, National Insurance number, and pay tax bills directly.
