A national campaign launched today aims to help people get the right care in the right place this winter, while easing pressure on the NHS.

The Help Us Help You campaign highlights how community pharmacies across Wales can provide expert advice and treatment for 28 common conditions without the need for a GP appointment.

Pharmacies are being promoted as the first point of contact for everyday health issues such as coughs, colds, skin rashes, sore throats, aches and pains. Pharmacists can also provide antibiotics for certain infections, including sore throats and urinary tract infections, where needed.

The initiative encourages people to make better use of accessible healthcare options, including optometrists, minor injury units, mental health helplines and NHS online consultations.

Health Secretary Jeremy Miles said:
“This winter, one simple change could make a huge difference to our NHS.

If you’re suffering from a common illness like a cough, cold, sore throat or minor ache, your local pharmacist can help.

Pharmacists are highly-qualified healthcare professionals who can provide confidential advice and treatment about a wide range of common conditions. It’s a straightforward and convenient way to get the help you need – while also helping GPs and emergency departments focus on people who need urgent care.”

As part of the campaign, NHS Wales is also encouraging people to make use of the Common Ailments Service, which provides free consultations and treatment for 28 common conditions at participating pharmacies.

Additional resources promoted include NHS 111 Wales for symptom checking, the CALL mental health helpline, and online cognitive behavioural therapy courses through SilverCloud.

The campaign also promotes support for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including advice on weight management, stopping smoking and staying active while waiting for treatment.

The overall message, according to NHS Wales, is that understanding where to turn for care can help people stay well and relieve winter pressures across the health system.
