Have your say on plans to protect Welsh rivers and coasts

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has opened a new public consultation on plans to protect and improve the health of the nation’s waterways.
The consultation, which runs until 21 April 2026, seeks views from residents, community groups and organisations on the challenges facing Wales’s rivers, lakes, groundwaters and coastal waters.
The feedback will inform the next set of River Basin Management Plans, which are updated every six years to guide how NRW and its partners manage and restore Welsh water environments.
Dr Rhian Thomas, Sustainable Water and Nature Manager at NRW, said:
“Our waters are under increasing pressure and threat from climate change and human activity. In recent years we have seen action at scale, by ourselves and many other organisations, to tackle some of biggest challenges causing pollution, poor water quality and habitat decline.
“But this is an opportunity for anyone who cares about the future health of our waterways to let us know what challenges and issues they see out in their local area, and to be part of the solution. Developing the next set of River Basin Management Plans provides us with an opportunity to set new ambitions for managing our waters in Wales. The action we take now will shape the health of our waters, and wildlife, for future generations.”
NRW will develop River Basin Management Plans for the Western Wales and Dee River Basin Districts. The Severn River Basin Plan, led by the Environment Agency in partnership with NRW, is expected to open for consultation later this year.
People can take part through NRW’s consultation webpage. Paper copies are also available by emailing [email protected]

NRW has also published an interim progress report on the current 2021–2027 River Basin Management Plans, assessing progress against environmental goals and the actions taken so far.
