Flintshire Sub Aqua Club celebrates 60 years of diving adventures

Flintshire Sub Aqua Club (FSAC) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, marking six decades since its formation in 1965.
The club, based at Cambrian Aquatic Centre in Connah’s Quay, has grown into a thriving community of divers, regularly exploring sites across the UK and beyond.
With 50 active members, FSAC meets every Wednesday from 7-9pm for training sessions, followed by a social gathering at a local venue.
Over the years, the club’s members have completed thousands of dives, and with access to three boats—including a 5m Humber and a 5.7m Osprey—the group enjoys diving in Liverpool Bay, Anglesey, the Llyn Peninsula, and inland sites such as Capernwray and Eccleston Delph quarries.
FSAC chairman Nathan McCarthy said: “We have a really good mixture of experience and enthusiasm—ranging from advanced instructors to Ocean Diver trainees. Our youngest diver is 14, and our oldest… well, we’re not saying!”
To mark its milestone year, the club is modernising its operations, with a focus on improving communication, organisation, and social media presence.
The club is also a regular participant in the annual Menai Boat Run, which raises funds for the RNLI, and will take part again this year.
As well as weekly training sessions, FSAC members regularly take part in dive trips.
Last summer, they spent a week diving in Portland, Dorset, and have planned a weekend of diving and socialising on the Llyn Peninsula this year.
Looking ahead to 2026, the club is considering a special trip to Scapa Flow, a renowned diving site in Scotland.
FSAC welcomes new members of all experience levels.
“If you fancy learning to dive, want to further your diving qualifications, or just get out diving more, why not get in touch or drop in on a Wednesday to say hello?” Nathan added.
