Flintshire campus among landmark Net Zero schools as WEPCo marks five years

Thousands of pupils across Wales are now learning in sustainable, Net Zero classrooms as the Welsh Education Partnership Company (WEPCo) marks its fifth anniversary.
Established in 2020 as a joint venture between the Welsh Government and Meridiam, WEPCo has delivered a series of major education projects across the country, including the flagship Mynydd Isa Campus in Flintshire.
The campus brings primary, secondary and community learning together under one roof and is Flintshire’s first school designed to be Net Zero Carbon in operation.
Jennie Williams, Senior Manager for Schools Planning and Provision at Flintshire County Council, said: “Mynydd Isa Campus is a pioneering development designed with long-term sustainability and resilience at its heart. As the Council’s first Net Zero Carbon in Operation school, the campus exemplifies a commitment to balancing immediate educational needs with the long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact. Through WEPCo’s 25-year energy performance monitoring commitment, the building will continue to meet efficiency targets and inform future policy development.”
Alongside Mynydd Isa, WEPCo has completed three new Net Zero primary schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf, including Llanilltud Faerdref Primary, which won the ‘Inspiring Design’ Award at the Education Building Wales Conference earlier this year. Further projects, such as the Cardiff & Vale College development, are also underway.
All WEPCo buildings are designed to be Net Zero Carbon in operation and are maintained for 25 years, ensuring efficiency and long-term value for public investment.
Since its launch, WEPCo has created learning spaces for more than 5,000 pupils, supported over 3,000 weeks of training and apprenticeships, and delivered more than 40 community initiatives.
Christian Stanbury, Chief Executive of WEPCo, said: “Reaching our fifth anniversary is about much more than a milestone – it’s about celebrating the thousands of learners, teachers and communities now benefitting from the schools and campuses we’ve helped to deliver. From flagship Net Zero projects like Mynydd Isa to award-winning primary schools, our focus has always been on creating sustainable spaces that will stand the test of time.”
WEPCo has also been invited to share its expertise internationally, with recent discussions held with the Ambassador of Uzbekistan on how to apply the Mutual Investment Model used in Wales.
