Discarded flare sparks coastguard callout near Duke of Lancaster

Flint Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Llanerch Y Mor on Friday evening after reports of a red flare sighting near the Duke of Lancaster Ship.
The team was tasked at 20:09 on 1 November following a call from members of the public who had seen the flare.
Coastguard Rescue Officers attended the scene and met with the first informant and other witnesses.
RNLI Flint Lifeboat was also tasked to assist in searching the estuary.
After a thorough search, and with no vessels found to be in distress, Coastguard officers were satisfied that the flares had been fired inland.
A used red flare and orange smoke casings in the area.
A spokesperson for Flint Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Marine flares must only ever be used in distress situations and not for entertainment, so please don’t be tempted to use them as fireworks for bonfire night celebrations.
“If HMCG receives an alert at or near the coast where a flare has been fired, we will always respond but won’t know the difference if you are using them as fireworks. This will tie up rescue resources when it isn’t necessary, putting our rescue teams at unnecessary risk and potentially diverted from a legitimate emergency.
“So please, DO NOT use flares as fireworks as they can easily be mistaken as an emergency situation at or near the coast.
“In an emergency at the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
