Age UK has delivered a petition signed by 173,949 people to No 10 Downing Street, urging the government to ensure older people are not left behind as public services increasingly move online.

New analysis reveals that nearly one in five (2.4 million, or 19%) older people in the UK have limited internet use, accessing it less than once a month or not at all. The figure is higher among some groups, including 32% of older Black people, 26% of older Asian people, 30% of those living alone, and 22% of older women and those facing financial hardship.

The charity warns that a ‘digital first’ approach, with insufficient offline alternatives, risks leaving many older people struggling to manage their healthcare, finances and daily tasks.

Sue, 73, who has poor eyesight and cannot use digital devices, said: “Everything is online these days. Trying to deal with some local authorities is an absolute nightmare if you don’t have people around you who can do it for you. I shouldn’t have to do that. I want to be treated equally.”

Mike, 76, added: “The stress and frustration of trying to operate online — I simply go round in circles and it is very upsetting. It all makes me feel rejected and excluded.”

Janet, 74, said she had given up trying to get doctor appointments and had gone without pain relief since a recent knee operation because she could not access services online or in person.

Caroline Abrahams CBE, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “Technology is transforming healthcare and other services, but no one should be left behind. We need a clear guarantee of offline alternatives including telephone and face-to-face options.

“Older people told us they feel belittled and unfairly bullied into going online, and that the lack of accessible alternatives is ageist. A poorly planned digital transition risks serious harm to millions of older people’s wellbeing and independence.”

Age UK calls for increased support to help older people who want to use digital technology, alongside protections for those who cannot or choose not to.

The charity offers advice and support through its Digital Champions programme and free advice line.
