Two Flintshire councillors slam running of Ewloe roundabout roadworks

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Two Flintshire councillors have criticised the running of the active travel works at the Ewloe and St David’s roundabouts.

Cllr Linda Thomas, the Labour ward councillor for Hawarden: Ewloe, said in a Facebook reply on Thursday evening that the situation was “unacceptable”.

Cllr Thomas said she would “take it up 1st thing on Monday”.

Cllr Helen Brown, who represents the neighbouring Hawarden: Aston ward for Reform UK, said she had met Streetscene officials after a “huge number of concerns and complaints” from residents.

Cllr Brown said: “Cabinet member for Streetscene has just come back to me. A Cllr declined a site visit but I’ve just told him that I will meet them there ASAP.”

On the same Facebook thread, one resident said “Road Ahead Closed” and “No Through Route” signs had been left in place on St David’s Park on Friday evening, when weekend access to the roundabout was available.

The resident described the signage as “totally misleading” for drivers unfamiliar with the area.

In a separate post, Cllr Brown said the works were “absolute mayhem” and the scheme was “running over now by 6 weeks and that’s subject to change”.

Cllr Brown also published the email addresses of Flintshire County Council leader Cllr Dave Hughes and deputy leaders Cllr Richard Jones and Cllr Paul Johnson, and told residents they could contact them to escalate complaints.

Cllr Brown said the Hawarden: Ewloe ward councillors, Cllr Thomas and Cllr Dave Mackie, “should also escalate complaints, like I have”.

Flintshire County Council confirmed on Thursday that completion of the works has slipped to mid-July, citing “on-site engineering difficulties”.

The works comprise two schemes.

A £900,000 Flintshire County Council scheme is redesigning the St David’s roundabout to a Dutch-style layout, where vehicles will give way to pedestrians and cyclists at parallel crossings.

A separate Welsh Government Active Travel scheme is installing new pedestrian crossings on the A494 Ewloe slip roads and widening footways under the A494.

Both began at the end of January and were originally due to be complete by mid-May.

They were designed with the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent and are being delivered by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.

In its statement, the council thanked the public “for their continued patience and cooperation”.

Cllr Brown said in a reply on the same thread: “It’s Streetscene thanking people for patience, not me, my patience has also gone”.
