Students become the teacher at recent online safety workshop in Flint

Residents of Llys Raddington Extra Care scheme in Flint had the chance to learn about online safety through a workshop presented by Digital Heroes from Cornist CP school.
Eight pupils, trained by Digital Communities Wales to help others become confident users of the internet, showcased their presentation skills to the residents.
With the support of their teacher and Digital Adviser at Digital Communities Wales, the children offered advice on how to keep themselves protected online, including safe passwords and avoiding scams and phishing emails.
The pupils also helped residents with individual requests on how to protect their devices.
The event was arranged between ClwydAlyn, Digital Communities Wales, and Cornist School after the children attended Digital Communities Wales’s Digital Heroes event in October 2022.
The workshop is part of Welsh Government’s national digital inclusion programme, Digital Communities Wales, managed by development agency Cwmpas.
Charlotte Elder, Senior Support Worker at Flintshire County Council’s Care Team at Llys Raddington said that the residents found the session very helpful, and enjoyed the children’s visit.
Anwen Williams, the teacher, remarked on the benefits of intergenerational learning, highlighting how older people could gain trust in online applications that help them with activities they used to do in person, such as banking and making GP appointments.
Ed Hughes, ClwydAlyn’s Executive Director of Care & Support praised the initiative, saying that it encourages people of all ages to come together and learn from each other, fostering greater community interaction and investment in each other.
The children intend to visit again and will be presenting on the use of smart speakers.
