North Wales Police warn of rise in mobile phone contract scams

North Wales Police have warned of a rise in mobile phone contract scams, with fraudsters posing as network providers and offering fake free gifts to steal account and banking details.
The force’s cyber crime unit said scammers were contacting people by phone, text and email, claiming they were eligible for a high-value reward or exclusive offer from their mobile provider.
To claim the reward, victims were being asked to hand over account information, passwords or verification codes, and payment or banking details.
Once that information was given up, scammers could take control of the account and access payment details, with the risk of financial loss and identity fraud.
The unit said people should never share personal or banking details with unsolicited callers or messages, and should be cautious of offers that sounded too good to be true.
Anyone wanting to check the legitimacy of an offer was advised to contact their provider directly using the official number on their bill, rather than a number supplied in the message.
The unit also recommended turning on account alerts and two-factor authentication where available.
Anyone who has shared information with a suspected scammer is asked to report it to their mobile provider and to Action Fraud.
