Flintshire primary school raises hundreds for victims of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

A school council’s idea to hold a Valentine’s Day disco in support of victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria resulted in hundreds of pounds being raised.

The young group of Ysgol Maes Y Felin pupils considered previous school discos, which were always so busy, and decided to plan a timetable with three classes taking part in their Valentine’s themed disco at any one time.

Led by Becky Saunders, year 5/6 teacher, the pupils put their plans into action. 

Firstly, elected council representatives approached kitchen staff to request that meals were served in classes that day. After this was agreed, the pupils set to work marketing the event. 

They created posters and held meetings about the cost of the disco; they talked about the rising costs of living and agreed that to make it fair, they would only ask for a voluntary contribution if children wore their own clothes. 

A few days before the event, posters were uploaded to the school’s social media to help raise awareness. 

Shortly afterwards, Jon Andrews, a friend of the school who represents St Peter’s Church, contacted the school and kindly offered to loan some coloured lights and a bubble machine. 

The organisers were delighted, knowing this would give the event a huge boost. 

As a bit of fun, the school council created a presentation for children to leave anonymous messages to one another throughout the disco. 

Mrs Saunders said: “In classes, children have been keeping up to date on recent events and it was agreed that any money raised would go towards supporting those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. 

“All of the children had a fantastic time dancing and enjoying their disco in their departments. 

The school council also received notes from children thanking them and Jon for such a well organised and fun event.

“I am so proud of the school council, they all worked so hard and showed such empathy for the earthquake victims.  We have raised £300 which was donated to the Red Cross in support of their Turkey-Syria Appeal.  I would like to thank everyone for their help and generosity.”
