Plaid Cymru’s North Wales Senedd Member Llyr Gruffydd has welcomed moves towards better-integrated rail services across the region, highlighting improvements at Flint station as a step in the right direction.

During a visit to the station, Mr Gruffydd met with representatives from Transport for Wales, Network Rail, and Avanti trains to discuss the future of rail transport in north Wales. He also viewed the ongoing installation of a new lift and bridge crossing, which will improve accessibility for all passengers.

“Improving accessibility is just one of the improvements to this important station on the North Wales rail line,” he said. “This will mean all passengers, including those with limited mobility and those carrying heavy luggage or pushchairs, will have a step-free, accessible route to and between platforms. It’s long overdue but I’m really pleased it’s happening now. The community space and waiting rooms are a big improvement too.”

Upgrades at Flint station, supported by £90,000 from the Railway Heritage Trust, include a refurbished ticket office, enhanced waiting rooms, a water refill unit, improved toilet facilities, new customer information screens, and landscaping work. The improvements are set to be completed next month.

Mr Gruffydd also welcomed news that additional train services stopping at Flint on routes towards London are in development.

“Flint serves a large part of the region and is consequently a popular starting point for journeys,” he said.

He added that cooperation between different rail operators appeared to be improving, which could lead to a more integrated public transport system for the region.

“The fragmentation and privatisation of the rail service has caused great problems in the past, but hopefully there is a move towards a properly integrated public transport service that benefits the population of this part of Wales,” he said.
