BT wants to put ‘Street Hub’ digital screens on Shotton pavement

BT has submitted plans to Flintshire County Council to install a new Street Hub on the pavement on Chester Road West in Shotton.
The proposal seeks planning permission and consent to display adverts for a single unit with two digital screens, one on each side.
The site is outside the Savers store on Chester Road West, in Shotton town centre.
Documents lodged with the council say the hub would provide free public Wi-Fi and allow users to make free phone calls.
The unit would also display community information and emergency messages.
In a covering letter, Libre Solutions Planning Department, writing on behalf of BT Group, said the company has “submitted a formal application to Flintshire County Council for Full Planning Permission and Express Advertisement Consent.”
The Street Hub is described as offering stronger Wi-Fi, the ability to monitor air quality and noise levels, technology to count pedestrian and traffic movements, 5G connectivity and real-time data about activity in the area.

The application states the unit would be located on publicly maintained highway land and that the required notice has been served on the highways authority.
The scheme forms part of a national partnership between BT and media company Global.
In a statement about the UK-wide rollout, Global said it has committed to installing up to 2,000 new units over the next decade.
Chris Forrester, Managing Director, Commercial Outdoor at Global, said: “Our next-generation, sustainable Street Hubs set a new standard for roadside digital outdoor advertising and mark a bold leap forward for the industry, connecting brands and communities up and down the country in more impactful ways.”
He added: “Our growing Street Hub network unlocks new opportunities for national and local advertisers, expanding reach throughout cities and towns across the UK.”
Thea Sztejka, Managing Director at BT Wholesale, said: “Digital connectivity is now a must-have for communities and high streets across the UK, and our new Street Hub units allow us to deliver that where it is needed most.”
She added that the upgraded units “will allow us to provide even more locations with future-proofed technology for years to come.”
The application will be considered by Flintshire County Council at a later date.
