Why online slots continue to dominate UK casino play despite tighter regulations
Online slots remain the most prominent revenue driver in the UK-regulated gambling market. In the second quarter of 2025, the UK recorded revenues of £1.49 billion ($2.02 billion). This was a 3% increase from the previous year’s GGY from the same period. Now, the majority of the revenue was attributed to online slots, which accounted for £745 million. Believe it or not, this was a 14% increase from 2024, and a new quarterly record.
Additionally, the number of spins was an all-time high in the quarter. They went up by 8% to reach 24.4 billion.
While these record figures are coming in, it is interesting to note that there have been new staking regulations introduced. For instance, since 9 April, players under the age of 25 were not allowed to wager more than £2 per spin. For those over the age of 25, the maximum bet per spin is nothing more than £5.
You would expect that having more wagering regulations would deter the growth of online slot games, but the contrary is true. Now this breeds the big question: why are online slot game revenues going up despite regulatory measures being made tighter?
