Welsh Government awards Flintshire £3.6m for roads, cycling routes and EV charging

Flintshire is set to receive more than £3.6 million in Welsh Government transport grants for 2026-27, covering new cycling and walking routes, road safety schemes, highway maintenance and electric vehicle charging.
The funding forms part of a £28.8 million package for North Wales announced on 18 March by Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales.
The largest single Flintshire allocation is £800,000 for an active travel route between Bagillt and Greenfield.
A further £500,000 has been awarded for active travel links to the A494 River Dee Bridge, alongside £710,000 for active travel minor works and scheme development across the county.
Road safety schemes account for £280,400 of the Flintshire total, split between £200,000 for engineering improvements at collision cluster sites and £80,400 for road safety educational interventions.
Flintshire’s highway maintenance and improvements programme receives £550,000, with a further £80,000 allocated for street lighting renewal.
The county’s public transport allocation includes £100,000 for the regional rural bus and coach network and £30,000 for bus priority measures.
Electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Flintshire public car parks is in line for £400,000.
The wider North Wales programme includes £470,000 to North Wales Corporate Joint Committee to manage and monitor regional transport planning.
Across Wales, the Welsh Government says the £115.9 million programme directs more than half of total funding, £58.5 million, towards walking, wheeling and cycling schemes.
Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said: “In North Wales we are investing £28.8 million in 2026-27, with a strong emphasis on supporting walking, wheeling and cycling, through schemes such as the Penrhyn Bay scheme in Conwy.”
He added: “The 2026-27 regional work programmes demonstrate our commitment to a one team approach and is the fruition of the trust we have placed in our partners: the CJCs, Local Authorities, Transport for Wales, and wider stakeholders to deliver a modern, sustainable and integrated transport system across Wales.”
Flintshire County Council was asked for a response.
