A55 re-opens following earlier collisions

Update:

Police reopened the A55 around 9.30pm tonight following the recovery of vehicles involved in a collision and investigation work.

Several people were taken to hospital after three collisions on the A55 earlier this evening, one person is reported to have recived serious injuries.

The A55 was closed in both directions as emergency services dealt with the incidents.

Police have said the westbound carriageway will remain closed for several hours.

“Vehicles are being turned around there are 20 in the first section and 150 cars in the second section” – police tweeted

Emergency services were called to three separate incidents within the space of an hour between junctions 36A Broughton Shopping Park and 38 the A483 Wrexham Road (Posthouse roundabout).

In one collision a car overturned near to the Posthouse Roundabout, no one is believed to have been hurt in the incident.

A woman has been taken to Aintree Hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving four cars and a HGV again near the Posthouse roundabout.

Another collision involved a car and lorry its reported minor injuries were received in this crash.
Latest travel update as of 6.30pm:

‘A55 both ways closed, very slow traffic due to multi-vehicle accident between J36A Chester Road (Broughton Shopping Park) and J38 A483 Wrexham Road (Posthouse roundabout) on the roundabout.

Also affecting A483 Wrexham Road Southbound between A5104 Hough Green / Lache Lane (Overleigh Roundabout) and B5445 Wrexham Road, congestion on A5104 Mold Road to A55 J36 (Warren Bank Interchange)

Eastbound is fully closed from Broughton. Westbound has been reported closed. Westbound is now using the A483 as a diversion. Three different accidents in the area.’

Emergency services say six casualties have been accounted for and are being taken to hospital.

In one collision a car has overturned near to the Posthouse Roundabout,

A second accident westbound near Broughton four vehicles and one heavy goods vehicle are reported to be involved.

Two fire engines from Chester and one from Ellesmere Port were called to the scene of one incident.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has said: 

‘Firefighters are currently in attendance at a road traffic collision in Chester involving four vehicles and one heavy goods vehicle, where one woman was reported to be trapped. Firefighters gained access to the vehicle and released the woman who was then taken to hospital.’

‘Crews then assessed further casualties and proceeded to make the scene safe. A total of six casualties were taken to hospital.’

‘The A55 is now closed in both directions as emergency services deal continue to deal with the incident, and is expected to be closed for some time.’

‘Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route. If anyone would like to monitor the status of the roads, please keep checking Cheshire Constabulary’s social media pages which will be updated when information becomes available.’
