The same leak detection kit NASA uses on the Space Station is running at a facility on Deeside Industrial Park

The operator of Parc Adfer, the energy from waste facility on Deeside Industrial Park, is using leak detection technology that NASA astronauts also use on the International Space Station.
enfinium, which runs Parc Adfer and four other energy from waste sites across the UK, says it has deployed Distran Ultra Pro sensors across all five of its operational plants.
The handheld devices use ultrasonic location to identify and visualise gas leaks, overlaying an acoustic image on a live optical feed to pinpoint precisely where leaks are occurring.
According to enfinium, the sensors can detect leaks of any gas type, including steam, CO2 and hydrogen, and can also identify vacuum leaks where unwanted air is drawn into systems operating under negative pressure.
The company says the technology supports its efforts to reduce fugitive emissions and maintain efficient operations by allowing engineers to survey large areas quickly and address problems before they cause extended downtime.
The Distran sensors are manufactured in Zürich, Switzerland, where the company was founded in 2013.
enfinium says the devices are also used by NASA astronauts on the International Space Station to pinpoint gas leaks and maintain cabin pressure.
Distran’s cameras are in use in more than 43 countries, according to the company.
Adam Nicholson, Asset Management Director at enfinium, said: “Distran sensors, used across all our sites, are an important element of our work to reduce emissions and deliver efficient waste management.
“The technology allows us to quickly and efficiently survey widespread areas to pinpoint precisely where leaks appear in our operations, allowing us to safely and effectively address the issue.
“This ensures reliability, efficiency and continuity of service, delivering on our mission to provide sustainable solutions to the UK’s waste whilst reducing carbon emissions.”
enfinium’s five operational plants process a combined 2.7 million tonnes of waste per year and generate enough energy to power 600,000 UK homes, according to the company.
Parc Adfer, located at Deeside Industrial Park, is Flintshire’s principal energy from waste facility.
