With six days remaining until the Self Assessment deadline, HM Revenue and Customs is urging people who have not yet filed to act now or face an automatic £100 penalty.

The deadline for submitting a Self Assessment tax return and paying any tax due for the 2024 to 2025 tax year is Friday 31 January. Missing the deadline triggers an immediate £100 fine, even if no tax is owed or the tax is paid on time.

HMRC said 8.6 million people have already submitted their return, leaving around 3.3 million still outstanding. More than 11.5 million customers filed by the deadline last year.

Taxpayers who have not yet started are being encouraged to use online support available through GOV.UK, including written guidance, webinars and YouTube videos. HMRC’s online services are available 24 hours a day.

Once a return has been submitted, HMRC said the quickest way to pay any tax owed is through the free HMRC app, which allows payments to be made in less than a minute. Other payment options are also available online.

Myrtle Lloyd said: “Don’t leave it until deadline day. Filing now will give you peace of mind that your tax return is completed and if you have tax to pay, you have a week to arrange payment.

“If you’re worried about paying your tax bill, you may be able to set up a payment plan online – search ‘difficulties paying HMRC’ on GOV.UK.”

This year’s deadline falls on a Saturday. HMRC phone lines are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm and will close on Friday 30 January, reopening on Monday 2 February. On Saturday 31 January, webchat support will be available through the Online Services Helpdesk.

HMRC said penalties for late filing increase over time. After the initial £100 fine, daily penalties of £10 per day can apply after three months, rising to a maximum of £900. Further penalties may be added after six and 12 months. Separate penalties and interest apply for paying tax late.

Customers who miss the deadline may avoid a penalty if they have a reasonable excuse, which HMRC will consider on a case-by-case basis.

HMRC also reminded customers to be alert to scams, warning it will never ask for personal or financial information by text or email.
