North Wales Police have released dash cam footage showing the moment a HGV crashes into the back of a broken down car on the A55 last year.

The HGV driver was given six penalty points and ordered to pay a £300 fine and costs when he was sentenced at Mold Crown Court today (Tuesday, 21st March).

61-year-old Thomas Anthony Holland, from the Llangollen area, was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Rhuallt Hill on October 28th, 2016.

Police were called shortly after 5pm to a report of a collision on the eastbound carriageway involving a HGV and a Kia Sorento car.

The Kia was stationary in lane one after breaking down when the HGV crashed into the back of the vehicle, injuring all four occupants – two adults and two children.

All four were taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd by ambulance with serious injuries.

PC Robert Williams from the North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit said:

“We were extremely lucky not to be dealing with a fatal road traffic collision and are thankful that all four occupants were released from hospital.
“This just shows that not paying attention when behind the wheel of any vehicle can have consequences.”
