Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club has been named Club of the Year at the Tennis Wales Awards.

The award was announced on Saturday and recognises the club’s growth, inclusivity and contribution to the local community.

Despite operating from just three courts, two of them floodlit, and serving a village of fewer than 4,000 residents, the club now has more than 250 members, with membership having increased almost fourfold in recent years.

Pen-y-ffordd Tennis Club Chair Nia Davis said: “We might be a small club but we have a huge heart and we’re so proud to have received the award. A massive thank you to our members, volunteers and everyone involved with the club, and well done to all nominees, finalists and winners.”

The club highlighted the role of volunteers in securing its future at a time when local tennis provision was uncertain.

Their efforts have helped create what the club describes as a friendly and inclusive environment for players of all ages and abilities.

Nia Davis said volunteers had been central to the club’s success, adding that their “tireless efforts, welcoming attitude, and commitment to supporting players of all ages and abilities have created a friendly, inclusive environment”.

On court, the past year has included competitive success, with the women’s team achieving promotion to Division 2, their first promotion in more than ten years.

The club has also expanded its coaching offer, introducing a girls-only coaching session during the summer, which attracted eight participants.

Off the court, members raised £2,091 for charity during 2025.

This included £1,087 raised for CLIC Sargent during a one-day fundraising event featuring more than 12 hours of tennis across all courts, as well as £352.60 raised for Young Lives vs Cancer through an adult tournament.

Looking ahead, the club says it is planning a range of in-house competitions, social events and further fundraising activities.

Nightingale House has been chosen as its charity of the year, while new coaching programmes and more inclusive playing opportunities are also planned.
