Wynne Construction has been appointed as lead contractor for a new joint archive centre planned for land next to Theatr Clwyd in Mold.

Flintshire County Council, working with Denbighshire County Council, confirmed the appointment as part of the Creative Archives project, which aims to bring together the collections of Flintshire Record Office in Hawarden and Denbighshire Archives in Ruthin under a single purpose-built building.

The North East Wales Archive, known as NEWA, was formed in April 2020 when the two services merged to provide a joint operation for the region.

The combined collections hold records dating back more than 900 years.

Wynne Construction will work with both councils to finalise architectural designs and prepare detailed proposals ahead of a second-round funding application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund later this year.

If the funding application is successful, construction is expected to begin in late spring or summer 2027, with the centre ready to open in autumn 2028.

Engagement and consultation activities are planned for June 2026.

The project is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund alongside financial contributions from Flintshire County Council, Denbighshire County Council and Welsh Government.

Councillor Mared Eastwood, Flintshire’s Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure, said: “Flintshire and Denbighshire are counties that are rich in heritage.”

She said she was “delighted that this appointment has been made so that we can further develop this project, which will ensure that our wonderful history will be preserved for years to come and give both local people and visitors the chance to explore and uncover the fascinating stories within the collections.”

Chris Wynne, managing director of Wynne Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this transformative project.”

He added: “We look forward to working in partnership with both Denbighshire and Flintshire Councils to create a development that supports growth, sustainability and community wellbeing.”
