National Year of Reading 2026 launches in Flintshire at Mold Library event

The National Year of Reading 2026 has launched in Flintshire, with more than 50 representatives from libraries, community organisations, cultural partners and public services gathering at Mold Library and Museum for an event hosted by Gwella Libraries.
Forty pupils from Ysgol Glanrafon’s school choir performed at the event.
Jack Sargeant MS, Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership, delivered the keynote address.
Gemma Jolly, Head of Health and Wellbeing at The Reading Agency, also addressed guests, setting out the aims of the National Year of Reading and the opportunities it presents for communities across Wales.
Attendees explored a range of initiatives designed to encourage reading across the county, including a Community Reading Pledge Wall, Book Bingo reading challenges, the Book Babies initiative and a Love Letters to Your Library campaign.
The launch begins a year-long programme of activities across Gwella’s libraries in Flintshire.
Andrew Bentley BEM, Managing Director of Gwella, said: “Libraries are at the heart of communities across Flintshire, giving people free access to books, learning, digital support and welcoming spaces to connect.
“The National Year of Reading is a great opportunity to build even more momentum around reading and to help more children, families and adults enjoy its benefits throughout the year.”
Gwella operates Flintshire’s leisure, library and wellbeing services on behalf of Flintshire County Council, running seven libraries and four leisure centres across the county.
