A six-metre sculpture of the Moon has been installed inside Chester Cathedral.

Museum of the Moon, created by artist Luke Jerram, will be on display from Thursday 12 February to Sunday 15 March.

The internally lit spherical artwork measures six metres in diameter and features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.

At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the sculpture represents 5km of the Moon’s surface.

The installation combines lunar imagery with a surround sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.

Throughout the exhibition there will be no charge for daytime entry to the cathedral. A suggested donation of £5 per person is encouraged. The cathedral said this contributes to hosting the exhibition, the ongoing maintenance and development of the building, and “keeping our doors open for all”.

The artwork will be located in the south transept. The cathedral has advised that the exhibition will be closed if other events are taking place in that area. Visitors travelling specifically to see the installation are advised to check closure dates in advance.

A programme of events will take place beneath the installation during its stay.

On Monday 16 February, A Grand Day Out at Chester Cathedral will be shown at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.45pm, with a SEND relaxed performance at 4.30pm. A Moon Model-Making Workshop will also take place that day at 10.30am, 12.30pm, 1.45pm and 3pm. An additional ticket is required for the workshop.

Family activities will run on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 February between 11am and 1pm, and 2pm and 4pm. No booking is required.

On Thursday 19 February at 11am, Revd Professor David Wilkinson will give a lecture titled From the Earth to the Moon and beyond: Human beings in cosmic perspective.

Monday Midday Mindfulness sessions are scheduled for 23 February, 2 March and 9 March at 12pm.

Evening openings will take place from 6.30pm on Thursday 26 February, Friday 27 February, Thursday 5 March and Friday 6 March.

A family silent disco, Sing Loud, will be held on Saturday 7 March at 1pm and 5.30pm.

Museum of the Moon has been co-commissioned by a number of creative organisations brought together by Luke Jerram and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The artwork was created in partnership with the UK Space Agency, University of Bristol and The Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
