A free workshop aimed at helping Flintshire businesses measure and reduce their carbon footprint is being held in Mold next month.

The Sir y Fflint Business Carbon Reduction Planning Workshop, organised by Antur Cymru Enterprise, will take place at Theatr Clwyd on Wednesday 4 February, running from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

The Lunch and Learn session is designed to support local organisations in developing a carbon reduction plan, while also highlighting potential operational and financial benefits.

Cathy Martin, Project Manager for the Flintshire Fund, said many businesses find that reducing carbon emissions can bring wider advantages beyond environmental impact.

She said: “Many organisations find that reducing carbon emissions also has other benefits, including cost savings as a result of using less energy. Carbon reduction can also be a part of reviewing operational processes resulting in efficiencies and perhaps less waste products. Customers are also leaning towards environmentally conscious products and organisations.”

Explaining why the workshop is being held now, she said: “The purpose of the Flintshire Fund project is to raise awareness of how organisations can reduce carbon emissions which includes supporting the creation of carbon reduction action plans, which involves how to capture and monitor carbon data and identify areas for investment. This will not only reduce carbon emissions but also provide cost savings, e.g. energy usage.”

She said time pressures and lack of expertise were common barriers for local organisations. “While organisations are becoming more environmentally aware they are often focused on running the business and have little time to look at their carbon footprint and often don’t know where to start.”

On how the session will support businesses, she said: “The workshop will start with the basics and provide information on how to incorporate data capture and monitoring in everyday business operations.”

Attendees are expected to leave with a practical outcome. “Attendees will leave with a draft Carbon Reduction Plan which will identify simple actions they can take as well as longer term goals.”

On the importance of early planning, she added: “Climate change is not going away and it is the responsibility of all of us to take actions, even small ones, to reduce carbon emissions.”

The event includes a free lunch from 11:30am, followed by the workshop session from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. It is open to Flintshire-based organisations and is free to attend.
