A man who pointed a kitchen knife inches from a Greggs worker’s chest and demanded money has been jailed for four years and six months.

Leon Langford, 49, of Wirral View, Mostyn, was sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Wednesday after admitting attempted robbery and possessing a knife in a public place.

He also admitted three counts of shoplifting and attempted theft following a string of offences on the same day, 5 January.

At around 7.30am, Langford walked into Greggs on Station Road, Queensferry, and pointed a kitchen knife inches from a staff member’s chest, demanding he hand over money from the till.

The worker went to get a manager, but Langford left the bakery before he returned, empty-handed.

The knife was recovered later that day.

The attempted robbery came in the middle of a morning of offending across Queensferry and Holywell.

Minutes before entering Greggs, Langford had stolen food from the Spar on Station Road.

Earlier that morning, he had attempted to steal a television from Asda in Queensferry.

After the Greggs incident, Langford went to Tesco in Holywell, where he concealed items in a bag and left without paying.

Civilian investigator Ann Parry, the investigating officer, said: “Incidents involving knives are unpredictable and have the potential to escalate rapidly into something far more tragic.”

“We also recognise that the impact of the incident at Greggs extended into the community, creating concern and distress locally.”

“Langford’s sentence will give local businesses the respite they deserve from his prolific offending, and we hope this result will reassure local businesses and their customers that we take retail crime seriously and will do everything we can to protect them from these offences.”
