Hawarden records 17°c — warmer than Ibiza — as North Wales enjoys warmest day of the year so far

Hawarden has recorded 17°c today, Tuesday March 17, making it one of the warmest places in the UK and a fraction warmer than Ibiza, as north Wales enjoyed one of the first warm spring days of the year.
The reading from Hawarden Airport’s weather station placed the Flintshire town joint fifth in the Met Office’s national maximum temperature table for the day, alongside Newcastle, Blackpool Airport, Topcliffe and Humberside.
Only Leeming and Teesside, both recording 18°c, and Rhyl at 17.2°c, came in higher across the whole of the UK.
Ibiza, by comparison, has recorded 16.7°c so far today .
The warm conditions are part of a broader spring spell forecast by the Met Office earlier this week.
Dan Harris, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said on Monday that Wednesday was likely to be the warmest day of the week for many parts of the UK, with temperatures of 18-19°c and possibly 20°c possible in parts of west Wales and western England.

He attributed the warmth in part to the Foehn effect — a weather phenomenon in which air moving over higher ground, such as the mountains of Eryri, warms as it descends on the other side, pushing temperatures higher than would otherwise be expected.
For Hawarden, however, Tuesday’s 17°c may prove to have been the local high point of the spell.
The forecast for the Hawarden shows Wednesday at 16°c before temperatures ease to 15°c on Thursday and 14°c on Friday.
The weekend brings a further drop, with Saturday forecast at 13°c and Sunday at 11°c.
Overnight temperatures tell a different story.
Lows of 3°c are forecast every night through to Saturday, with Sunday dropping to 6°c.
The Met Office warned on Monday that the large difference between warm daytime and cold overnight temperatures meant some places could see air frost this week.
Thursday and Friday are expected to stay dry and settled with sunny spells before conditions become more changeable heading into the weekend.
