Sixth form students at Hawarden High School have raised more than £400 for Macmillan Cancer Support after hosting a coffee morning and bake sale at the school.

The event was organised by the school’s Student Leadership Team and aimed to raise money for the charity while also strengthening links between the school and local businesses.

In a write-up provided by Head Students Joshua and Izzi, the students said the fundraiser brought together pupils, staff and the wider community, with cakes and refreshments selling out halfway through the school day.

They wrote: “As a Student Leadership Team we recently hosted a very successful Macmillan Coffee Morning, and we raised over £400 for Macmillan Cancer Support while also bringing students, staff and small local businesses together.”

Students from the sixth form donated cakes and helped run the event, while pupils from all year groups and staff supported the fundraiser by buying a range of cakes, pastries and cookies.

The head students said the event also highlighted the wider impact of small-scale fundraising.

They wrote: “This event showed how even small donations can add up to make a real and powerful difference.”

Support was also provided by a number of local businesses, including Gladstone’s Library, Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, The Gallery, Clwyd Bakery and The Charcoal Gallery. The students said all money raised was donated directly to Macmillan Cancer Support.

In their write-up, Joshua and Izzi said the coffee morning demonstrated the importance of schools and community spaces supporting one another, particularly places that offer young people welcoming environments to study, socialise and take part in activities beyond the classroom.

They added that Hawarden High School hopes the fundraiser will be the start of further partnerships and show what can be achieved when a community works together.
