Hannah Blythyn MS pays tribute to trailblazing East Flintshire MP at Senedd women’s event

Hannah Blythyn MS has spoken at a celebration event in the Senedd honouring women commemorated by Purple Plaques Cymru, paying tribute to Eirene White, who served as MP for East Flintshire for 20 years and whose plaque was unveiled at Flint Town Hall in 2022.
The event brought together those involved in the 22 unveilings carried out since the initiative began in 2018.
Eirene White was, according to the Purple Plaques Cymru event materials cited by Hannah Blythyn MS, one of the first three women to represent Wales in Parliament.
She began her career in 1945 as the first female political correspondent at the Manchester Guardian before standing for election.
She went on to represent East Flintshire as an MP for two decades, and later became Baroness White of Rhymney, continuing her public service in the House of Lords.
Hannah Blythyn MS said: “Eirene White was a pioneering politician of her age and someone who truly helped blaze the trail for others.

“From her early career in journalism to her years representing East Flintshire, she made a lasting difference to her community and beyond.
“I remember my mum recollecting Eirene’s office being near where she lived growing up and the stories of the first woman MP for the area speaking from the balcony at Flint Town Hall.”
The MS added: “It is only right that Eirene White is recognised in this way, particularly in the community she served for two decades.
“I hope her story, and those of the other women honoured through Purple Plaques, will continue to inspire future generations to learn about and build on their legacy.”
Hannah Blythyn MS represents the Delyn constituency in the Senedd, which covers Flint, Holywell, Mold and surrounding areas.
