A Flintshire-based landscape and environmental design studio is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Land Studio, which operates across Wales and the UK, has marked a decade in business since being founded in early 2016.

The studio, which has offices in Flintshire and Chester, has grown from a small design practice into a multi-disciplinary team bringing together landscape architecture, civil engineering and ecology. Its work focuses on nature-based design solutions intended to enhance biodiversity and connect people with the natural environment.

Landscape architect Simon Richards, who founded the business, said: “At the core of everything we do is the idea of connecting people with nature, not just designing attractive spaces, but creating landscapes that thrive ecologically and socially.”

Over the past 10 years, Land Studio has delivered more than 500 projects and expanded to a team of 14. Engineering, sustainable drainage systems and ecology are embedded within its design approach, with projects spanning sectors including education, housing, historic estates and holiday parks.

The studio’s work stretches from across Wales and the North West of England to Scotland and the south coast of England, as well as international projects as far as Gibraltar.

A key strength of the practice is its integrated approach to complex challenges such as sustainable drainage, biodiversity enhancement and site planning. Rather than treating these as separate technical elements, Land Studio brings them together within a single design process, which the company says is increasingly important as environmental legislation evolves.

Simon Richards said there had been a noticeable shift in attitudes towards development in recent years.
“I’ve seen a clear shift in how development is approached and a more nature-led mindset is gradually becoming the norm.

“The strategic approach we take to sites is now central to whether schemes succeed, through planning and ultimately on the ground. On a number of recent projects, for example, bringing ecology and drainage into the conversation at the very first masterplanning stage has allowed us to unlock sites that might otherwise have stalled at planning.

“Space is being allowed for habitats to establish, and complex, layered landscapes for drainage, recreation and nature are being created. Compared with 20 years ago, this is a dramatic and positive shift.”

He added that supporting clients through environmental regulation had become a consistent theme in the studio’s work.
“A common thread in our work as a practice is helping clients and teams navigate the ever-changing world of environmental legislation. Whether it’s nitrates in a river catchment or the requirements for biodiversity enhancement, our advice is consistent: start early, make strategic decisions based on legislative requirements, and take a whole-team approach that brings development, ecology, drainage and landscape together.”
