Chester Road: Shotton improvement works: what is happening and when through to end of March

Flintshire County Council has confirmed the remaining timetable for the B5129 Chester Road improvement scheme, with overnight resurfacing due to start on 24 March 2026.
The 26-week programme, which began last month, is being carried out on Chester Road between Connah’s Quay and Shotton.
The scheme includes resurfacing the carriageway, replacing bus shelters, removing barriers, and creating right-turning pockets at Charmleys Lane, Chester Close, Nelson Street and Jubilee Street.
Work is currently under way at Chester Close, where kerb alignments are being adjusted to form a right-turn pocket.
That phase is due to finish when the resurfacing phase begins in the week of 16 March.
From that point, the programme runs as follows.
Night-time convoy working between 7pm and 7am will cover the stretch from the eastern side of Nelson Street to Shotton Lane, including the junction.
Full carriageway resurfacing starts on 24 March and is programmed to run for three nights.
That work includes removal of the existing road surface and ironworks adjustments, including the replacement of covers and gulleys.
Traffic signal works, described as loop cutting, are scheduled for the weekend of 27 and 28 March.
Two further nights of road marking will follow.
The overnight schedule is designed to keep the most disruptive work away from peak daytime hours.
Flintshire County Council said traffic management at the site will be reduced or removed in the evenings where it is safe to do so, but that this will not always be possible due to safety, logistical or programme requirements.
Traffic signals on the site have been reconfigured to allow greater manual control of traffic movements as the scheme progresses.
Flintshire County Council said: “Traffic conditions will continue to be closely monitored in collaboration with our contractor. Given the volume of traffic using this stretch of road, disruption is unfortunately inevitable whilst works are undertaken within the carriageway.
Traffic management arrangements are therefore kept under continual review, and further measures are continually being considered to manage traffic flows as effectively as possible.”
Properties directly affected by the overnight working will receive advance warning letters before the night-time phase begins, and warning signs will be installed on site.
All dates remain subject to change due to weather or unforeseen site conditions.
Further updates will be published as the scheme progresses.
