Cancer Research UK fundraisers in Connah’s Quay hand over £16,000 after year of events

A group of Cancer Research UK volunteers from Deeside have raised £16,000 for the charity over the past year, up around £1,000 on the previous year’s total.
The CRUK Deeside Committee held its annual cheque presentation at Caffinnafi in Connah’s Quay, a community hub for veterans where the group meets monthly.
The funds were sent directly to Cancer Research UK, and the committee says all money raised stays in Wales.
Committee member Wendy Mitchell-Craig said the group wanted to thank every supporter and all the companies who continue to help raise funds.
“Ray and I have lost many, many loved ones to this horrible disease, and we are determined to help find that cure and beat cancer,” she said.
The committee’s main fundraising events include an annual rowing challenge from Connah’s Quay to Chester led by Ray Woolley, pub quizzes at the Navy Club, and donations from local families, businesses and funeral directors.
Supporters include Yvonne’s Cafe, JE Davies & Son, Busby & Kane, the Red Hall and the Navy Club.
Ray Woolley is a fisherman who has lived in Connah’s Quay all his life and has been raising money for charities for more than 50 years.
Ray, 85, is well known for his annual charity row along the River Dee from Connah’s Quay to Chester.
The committee has four members: Sarah Craig, Wendy Mitchell-Craig, Anne Evans and Ray Woolley.
They have been using Caffinnafi for their monthly meetings for about a year.
Naomi Horlock, VC Hub Director at Caffinnafi, was also present at the cheque presentation.
