Buckley resident sets up chair aerobics class for older neighbours

A former fitness instructor has set up a weekly chair aerobics class for residents at a Buckley over-55s housing scheme.
Ann Walker, who moved to Nant Mawr Court with her husband Steve, started the class to give her neighbours a chance to keep mobile and meet up.
Around eight residents take part each week.
Nant Mawr Court is a ClwydAlyn scheme with 30 apartments for people aged over 55.
Ann Walker said: “Two and half years ago, myself and my husband Steve moved into our new home in Buckley.
“I started the chair aerobics sessions because I love teaching and helping other people; seeing how they progress.
“The class really brings us all together more as a community.”
She tailors the sessions for participants with health conditions, offering alternative movements as the class works through its routine.
Ann Walker said: “If only one person turned up, I’d still do the class as it makes everybody feel good!
“It’s great fun; we always have a laugh and go away happy.
“And people have also told me that the sessions help their mobility.”
She said gentle exercise mattered more for older adults, particularly those managing conditions such as arthritis.
Ann Walker said: “As we age, it’s even more important to keep our muscles toned.
“With conditions that come on as we get older, like arthritis, even a small amount of exercise can help.
“I would encourage anyone who can to join a small exercise group.
“Exercising in class, you’re more likely to do it, as you feel committed!
“And, it’s also a great way to make friends!”
