Accessibility upgrade moves forward at Shotton station

Shotton railway station has moved to the next stage of the Access for All (AfA) programme, a UK Government initiative supported by Welsh Government funding to improve station accessibility.
The announcement means Shotton is now progressing to the detailed design stage, one of only 23 stations across the UK to do so.
The AfA programme aims to deliver step-free routes and better access for passengers with reduced mobility, including the installation of lifts and improved facilities.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said: “I’m pleased to welcome this good news. The Access for All programme is delivering vital accessibility improvements to UK Government-owned railway stations in Wales.
“Backed by our match-funding commitment, this announcement is a major step forward for the AfA schemes at Shotton and Ruabon and paves the way for more UK Government investment into our Welsh railways.
“These stations are key for passengers travelling in north Wales and central to our ambitious plans for Network North Wales – underlining the importance of our continued partnership working with the UK Government.
“We will continue to work closely with the UK Government, local leaders and wider rail industry in Wales to improve the accessibility of our railway.”
Shotton is a key interchange station serving both the North Wales Coast Line and the Borderlands Line to Wrexham. Accessibility improvements at the station have long been sought by residents and local groups, many of whom have highlighted the difficulties faced by passengers using the existing footbridge and platforms.
Once complete, the upgrade will provide step-free access between platforms and help make the station easier to use for all travellers.
