Wepre Park visitor centre switches to green heating

Flintshire Council says one of its most prominent attractions is now heated by a pioneering low carbon system.
Wepre Park Visitor Centre had its gas boiler replaced in September 2025 with an air source heat pump, which draws heat from the outside air and feeds it into the building’s central heating system.
The council says the move takes it a step closer to meeting the targets set out in its Climate Change Strategy by shifting building heating from gas to electricity.
The centre is on a green energy tariff, meaning its electricity is sourced from renewable generation such as solar and wind. The building is now described as net zero in operation as it no longer uses fossil fuels.
Funding for the project came through the Welsh Government’s Low Carbon Heat grant. The council says this shows its commitment to cutting emissions across Flintshire.
Installing an air source heat pump at one of the county’s main countryside visitor centres is described by the council as a win for wildlife and the community by reducing emissions and supporting nature.
Cllr Chris Dolphin, Cabinet Member for Economy, Environment and Climate said “It is great to see the council taking proactive steps towards reducing their building emissions and meeting their climate change strategy targets, especially with a building such as Wepre Park Visitor’s Centre, which is one of many prominent attractions in Flintshire”.
