Welsh Government boosts Theatr Clwyd redevelopment funding

Mold’s Theatr Clwyd has been awarded a further £1.87 million in Welsh Government funding to support its ongoing redevelopment.
The funding will support work linked to the discovery of asbestos at the site, as well as the provision of new furniture and equipment, subject to conditions.
The latest award takes the total Welsh Government investment in the Theatr Clwyd redevelopment project to £25.37 million since the 2022/23 financial year.
The funding was announced as part of a wider £8.94 million package to support cultural services across Wales, including museums, libraries, archives and major arts institutions.
The Welsh Government said the investment is intended to strengthen what it describes as Wales’ “essential” cultural foundations and improve access to cultural services across communities.
Minister for Culture, Jack Sargeant, said:
“This is another significant investment in Welsh cultural institutions and reaffirms my belief that our museums, archives and libraries are not optional extras but essential cultural foundations.
“These projects will not only improve access to museums, archives and libraries but will foster collaboration, preserve local history and strengthen engagement, learning and participation across communities.”
Alongside the funding for Theatr Clwyd, the announcement included separate allocations for a range of cultural bodies and programmes across Wales, including support for arts venues, museums and national organisations.
Dafydd Rhys, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Wales, said:
“We welcome Welsh Government’s increased investment in the arts sector, with enhanced capital funding, as well as additional support for Welsh National Opera and the exciting major development at Theatr Clwyd.
“This commitment will bring lasting benefits to communities across Wales, and we look forward to continuing our work with the arts sector to ensure inspiring, high-quality arts experiences are available throughout Wales.”
The Welsh Government said its overall spending on the culture sector has increased by 8.5% this year, with investment in venues and sites now three times higher than a decade ago.
The redevelopment of Theatr Clwyd is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently underway in Wales and is intended to modernise the venue, improve accessibility and expand its role as a regional arts centre serving north-east Wales and the cross-border area.
