Residents at an independent living scheme in Flint have been recognised with a Mayor’s Community Award for their creative Remembrance Day tribute made from hundreds of handmade poppies.

The community at Llys Raddington, an independent living scheme for the over-60s in the heart of Flint, came together to design and build the installation to mark Remembrance Day 2025.

Resident Jane Swinton, who served in the RAF, explained how the project began: “This project started from a 3am thought, from which we formulated a plan. We put out an SOS to our fellow residents to collect their used plastic bottles so we could start the process. We had no idea we were so artistic! We feel this year, in particular, being the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, was the perfect ‘Thank You’ to all who served for our freedom.”

Jane, along with residents Susan Peers, Barbara Foulkes and Maureen Parry, used the bases of plastic bottles, which they painted red, to form the poppy display. The installation features several hundred handcrafted flowers attached to wire mesh, illuminated by red lights and framed by two soldier silhouettes.

Mayor of Flint, Cllr Russell Davies, selected the residents to receive a Mayor’s Community Award. He said:
“Their creativity and dedication have produced a beautiful and meaningful tribute, honouring such a special day of remembrance. Thank you for your time, effort, and inspiring work.”

Carol Thomas, extra care services manager at ClwydAlyn, which owns and operates Llys Raddington, added:
“The poppy display is a wonderful achievement. It is excellent to see the residents receive well-deserved recognition for the creativity and effort they have put into making a meaningful tribute for Remembrance Sunday.”

The display will remain in place until after Remembrance Day, allowing residents and visitors to pay their respects to those who have died in conflict.
