Train company which transports steel to Shotton from Port Talbot to shed 900 jobs
Rail freight company DB Cargo says it is planning to cut over 900 jobs in the UK.
DB Cargo, which is headquartered in Doncaster handles rail freight from Port Talbot Steelworks transporting steel up to Shotton for coating.
The company announced their decision today and saying potential losses were due to a “dramatic decline” in markets such as coal.
Rail Union RMT responds to savage job cuts announced at DB Cargo.
General Secretary Mick Cash said;
“This is devastating news brought on through a combination of cut-throat practices in the UK rail freight industry and a shocking lack of Government support for this key section of our transport infra-structure.
“RMT’s executive will be meeting this afternoon to consider our response but it is imperative right now that the Government intervene to save skilled jobs in the rail freight industry which are being butchered before our eyes due to a lack of action to protect steel, coal and the rest of our manufacturing base.”
DB Cargo is the largest rail freight haulier in the UK, employing more than 3,400 people across the country.
It’s not known what affect the losses will have on freight services between Shotton and Port Talbot.
