Households in Flintshire who use heating oil or liquid petroleum gas and are struggling to pay their bills can now claim up to £750 from a Welsh Government emergency fund, after the cap was raised from £500.

The Discretionary Assistance Fund, known as the DAF, has also been changed to allow eligible households to apply twice within a 12-month period.

The Welsh Government said the change recognises that some households which received support earlier in the winter may need to apply again as fuel prices remain high.

Applications can be made through Flintshire County Council, housing associations, and third sector organisations including Citizens Advice.

Many rural Flintshire communities, including villages in Cilcain, Caerwys, Llanasa, Whitford and Treuddyn, rely on heating oil because they are not connected to the mains gas network.

Separately, a one-off £200 payment is available for households on the Council Tax Reduction Scheme who use heating oil or LPG.

That payment is funded from £3.8 million allocated to Wales by the UK Government, announced on 16 March 2026.

Flintshire County Council will contact eligible households directly and ask them to confirm their heating fuel type and provide bank details, with payments made into bank accounts.

Households have six months from the scheme’s launch to claim, though the Welsh Government has not confirmed an opening date in its announcement.

Jane Hutt MS, the Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, said: “The cost of living continues to put pressure on many households across Wales, and the conflict in the Middle East is driving up prices, adding to the anxiety many people already feel about paying their bills and heating their homes.”

“Supporting people through these pressures is a priority for us and we are doing all we can for those who need it most.”

The Welsh Government also announced a Warmth on Prescription pilot, running from September 2026, though this will operate in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area in south Wales and will not be available to north Wales residents.

That pilot will provide 100 households with £500 paid directly to their energy supplier, with participants referred through the health board rather than applying directly.

Longer-term support is available through the Warm Homes Nest scheme, which offers free energy efficiency advice and improvements to eligible low-income households.

Nest can be contacted on 0808 808 2244.

Residents who are unsure what support they are entitled to can contact Advicelink Cymru on 0800 702 2020.
