A four-month programme of active travel and road safety improvements at two roundabouts in Ewloe will begin on Sunday, 25 January 2026, Flintshire Council has confirmed.

The £900,000 scheme, funded by the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund and delivered in partnership with the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA), aims to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Ewloe and St David’s Park.

Phase 1 of the works will involve an inner lane closure at Ewloe roundabout, with additional lane restrictions on the A494 westbound and eastbound off-slip roads. Closures will be in place 24 hours a day during this stage.

Overnight work will also take place between 25 January and 4 February, including a series of short-term slip road closures.

Diversions will be clearly signposted via the A55 J33 and Queensferry junctions, depending on the direction of travel.

Traffic Wales said: “The work will be carried out using lane closures with temporary traffic management, traffic lights and full road closures at times. Works will be carried out during the daytime with some full road closures required overnight.”

The full scheme, running until 15 May 2026, will deliver new pedestrian crossings and widened footways linking Ewloe and St David’s Park.

Councillor Glyn Banks, Cabinet Member for Waste and Transportation, said the project represents an important investment in pedestrian safety at one of Flintshire’s busiest junctions.

“We know the works will cause some short-term inconvenience, and we thank everyone for their patience while these long-term improvements are delivered,” he said.

Traffic management will remain in place throughout the works to protect both the workforce and road users.

Motorists are advised to plan journeys in advance and allow extra travel time while work continues.
