Skills workshop supports young residents in Holywell

Young people living at a supported housing scheme in Holywell have taken part in a wellbeing and life skills session designed to help them manage emotions and make positive choices.
Residents at Llys Emlyn Williams, a supported living scheme for 16 to 24 year olds, took part in The Decider, an evidence-based cognitive behavioural programme delivered by Action for Children’s Skills Plus (North Wales) team.
The session, held earlier this month, focused on practical techniques to support emotional regulation, stress management and interpersonal skills.
Participants took part in activities covering sleep strategies, breathing exercises, grounding methods and mindfulness practices.
Facilitator Lisa Hibbert said: “It was fantastic to see the young people having fun, connecting with each other and learning practical tools they can use in everyday life.”
Sean McManus, manager at Llys Emlyn Williams, which is owned and managed by social housing provider ClwydAlyn, said: “The Decider drop-in session was incredibly valuable to the young residents who attended. They were shown some excellent techniques to help with resilience and handling situations that arise in daily life. They also have the opportunity to work with a mentor to assist them with accessing educational courses and employment opportunities.”

Resident Amy said: “I really enjoyed the session and got a lot from it. The emotion biscuits were something that I would like to do again with the Llys Emlyn Williams staff.”
Resident Sean said: “The session was amazing.”
Resident Alex said: “We were shown a really helpful anger management technique. It involves looking for five things you can touch, five things you can see and five things you can hear. It helps with stabilising mood and I really liked it.”
Six residents took part in the session, which draws on cognitive behavioural approaches to support care-experienced young people. The practical skills aim to help them develop emotional awareness, confidence and independence as they move towards adulthood.
It is anticipated that The Decider sessions will be expanded to other ClwydAlyn supported living schemes across North Wales.
