Buckley’s new shared Banking Hub has reached its six-month milestone, earning praise from local residents, community groups and elected representatives.

The facility, based in Buckley Library, was officially opened earlier this year by Alyn and Deeside MS Jack Sargeant.

Delivered through a partnership between Principality Building Society and shared banking provider OneBanx, it enables people to deposit and withdraw cash from their current accounts without needing a bank card.

The free, bilingual service, available in both English and Welsh, is staffed by Principality colleagues.

The hub has been warmly welcomed by the community following the closure of Buckley’s last high street bank, which left residents without convenient access to cash. A 2019 petition calling for better banking services in the town gathered more than 100,000 signatures and drew national attention.

Jack Sargeant MS said: “It’s fantastic to see the Buckley Banking Hub hit its six-month milestone. Since opening its doors, the banking hub has quickly become a very valued asset for the local community.

“I know how important access to cash is for residents and local businesses, that’s why I successfully campaigned to bring services back to Buckley. I’d like to thank the brilliant Principality staff at Buckley for their hard work over the last six months, supporting the local community.

“If you haven’t visited the Hub yet, please pop in for a chat or head to Principality Building Society’s website for more information on services available.”

Local groups have also praised the facility. A Macleod, Treasurer of Jubilee Court Senior Citizens Association, said: “Since the closure of Lloyds bank in Buckley I have had to use the branch in Mold, which means transport and travel time make it inconvenient to use the facilities.

“Since the opening of Principality in Buckley I have been a regular customer, depositing cash on a regular basis on behalf of Jubilee Court Senior Citizens Association, which is a self-funding not-for-profit organisation.

“I have found that the Principality branch in Buckley is more convenient and the service is always friendly and professional which makes my task of depositing cash simple and effective. I hope this branch continues to give this service into the future.”

Vicky Wales, Chief Savings Officer at Principality Building Society, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate six months of the OneBanx terminal serving the Buckley community. Since opening, it’s helped restore vital access to cash and day-to-day banking services that many people and small businesses rely on.

“The success of the shared branch concept shows just how important local access to cash remains – not only for individual customers but for the economic vitality of our high streets.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to Jack Sargeant, local councillors and the Principality team for making more possible for the Buckley community.”
