Schools and college close after Connah’s Quay water main burst

Welsh Water engineers are working to restore supplies after a burst water main left parts of Connah’s Quay and Deeside without water on Thursday morning.
The company confirmed that the fault has affected supplies across the area, with some homes and businesses experiencing low pressure or no water. Welsh Water expects supplies to be fully restored later this afternoon.
A spokesperson for Welsh Water said:
“We’re aware of a burst on our network which is affecting the water supply to this area. Until the pipe is fixed, you may experience low pressure or no water. We expect all supplies to be fully restored by later this afternoon. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The outage has forced a number of local schools and colleges to close due to health and safety concerns linked to the loss of essential facilities such as toilets, handwashing and drinking water.
Connah’s Quay High School announced the closure early this morning, saying:
“Due to a loss of water supply affecting the local area, the school is fully closed today on health and safety grounds. This is because essential facilities, including toilets, handwashing and drinking water, are unavailable. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and thank parents and carers for their understanding.”
Golftyn Community Primary School has also confirmed it is closed for the same reason.
Coleg Cambria’s Deeside site has similarly closed for the remainder of the day. The college said the loss of water meant key services including catering, drinking water and sanitation were unavailable.
In a message to students and staff, the college said:
“For health and safety reasons, we have made the decision to close the Deeside site for the remainder of the day. All scheduled lessons and staff working will transition to an online format for the rest of today (8 January 2026). College transport has been organised to collect students from the Deeside site by no later than noon today.”
Learners based at the Northop site have been advised to catch the regular link bus home, with departures scheduled from Northop by 11.30am.
Welsh Water said engineers are following a five-stage process to resolve the issue, including investigation, repair and reinstatement of the affected pipework.
Customers are being advised to run their cold kitchen tap once supplies return, as this may help to clear any discolouration in the water.
