Road closure for 12-week paving works on Nuns Road, Chester

Paving along Nuns Road in Chester will be lifted and relaid later this month, with a full road closure needed for the duration of the work.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed that the project is due to begin on Monday 19 January 2026 and is expected to take around 12 weeks, up to Easter, depending on weather conditions.
The existing paving, which runs alongside the City Walls, has been damaged and lifted by tree roots, creating several trip hazards.
The Council’s Highways Service will reuse as much of the existing paving as possible. The edges of the tree pits will be reset with a double row of granite, and a resin material will be used to fill the surrounding area, allowing tree roots to move naturally without damaging the surface.
Because the paving forms part of the City Walls, which are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the programme required approval from Historic England and the Council’s Conservation team.
A number of conditions were set by Historic England before work could begin, including a detailed laser scan to record the current condition of the section of wall next to the works area.
To carry out the works safely, a full road closure will be in place along Nuns Road for the duration of the project.
Work will start from the Watergate Street end of Nuns Road and progress south in two phases on either side of Grey Friars. Access to Roomzzz will be maintained throughout from the Watergate Street end.
Traffic leaving near the HQ building will be required to turn left onto Nuns Road and continue to Grosvenor Road. For part of the project, Grey Friars will also be closed to through traffic. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.
