The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) have issued a joint warning about fire risks linked to emollient skin creams as colder weather arrives.

Emollients are widely used to soothe dry or itchy skin. The creams themselves are not flammable, but residue can build up on clothing, bedding and bandages, making them ignite more easily and burn faster if exposed to flames or heat sources such as open fires, gas heaters or cigarettes.

To reduce the risk, MHRA and NFCC are reminding users to follow three safety steps:
• Keep away from flames or open fires, as contaminated fabrics can catch fire quickly.
• Stay at least one metre away from heaters or open flames.
• Wash bedding and clothing regularly at the highest recommended temperature to reduce residue build-up, while remaining cautious as washing does not remove residue entirely.

Catriona Blake, from the MHRA’s Safety and Surveillance team, said: “Winter brings warmth, comfort and more time indoors – but it can also bring increased fire risk. Residues from emollient creams can make fabrics burn faster than people expect. Following a few straightforward steps can prevent fires and protect lives.”

Chris Bell, Emollient Lead at the National Fire Chiefs Council, said: “Our crews have seen how quickly fires can escalate when skin creams are involved. We’re asking everyone – especially carers, family members and healthcare professionals – to help share this message. Keep flames and heat sources well away from contaminated fabrics, wash fabrics regularly, and follow fire safety advice. These simple actions can save lives.”

The MHRA and NFCC are encouraging people who use emollient creams, or care for someone who does, to complete an online home fire safety check at www.ohfsc.co.uk

The campaign, Know the Fire Risk, provides further guidance on how to stay safe when using these products.
