The historic Druid Inn in Pontblyddyn is set to be transformed into a specialist eye clinic after Flintshire County Council approved plans for its change of use.

The 200-year-old former pub, which closed in 2020, has stood empty for several years despite multiple attempts to sell it, including a withdrawn auction in 2024.

It has now been purchased by ophthalmologist Dr Sohraab Yadav, who has now received planning consent to convert the former restaurant and public house into a state-of-the-art medical facility.

Under the approved plans, the ground floor will house two clinical rooms, a minor procedures room, a theatre for complex treatments and a recovery suite. The first floor will include office space and a staff room.

No external alterations are planned, ensuring the landmark building retains its familiar appearance on the A541 Wrexham Road.

In his planning submission, Dr Yadav said: “The new clinic will provide both NHS and private services that will not only be of benefit to local patients but will also help bring many jobs and growth to the local area.”

The clinic will employ 22 staff, including 10 full-time positions.

The proposal was approved under delegated powers on 22 December 2025.

Planning officer Alison Dean said the change of use “is supported in principle by policy” and found “no adverse effect on the highway, on phosphates or ecology, or on the character and appearance of the locality or nearby Listed Building.”

The Druid Inn sits opposite the Grade II-listed Christ Church, but Flintshire’s conservation officer confirmed the conversion would not harm the church’s setting.

Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales confirmed the site’s wastewater and drainage arrangements were acceptable and would not increase phosphate levels in local watercourses.

No objections were received from Leeswood Community Council or members of the public.

The decision clears the way for Dr Yadav’s first Welsh clinic, adding Pontblyddyn to a network of practices across Chester, Shrewsbury, Knutsford, Northwich, Macclesfield and Wirral.
