Planning: Amendments sought to sports facilities at new Argoed School

Contractors working on the multi-million Argoed School project in Mynydd Isa have requested a number of amendments to the plans.
The all-through school site, which will encompass both the current Argoed School and Ysgol Mynydd Isa Primary, was topped out more than 18 months ago but Arup have now submitted plans to alter the sports facilities.
The main reason for the change is the high voltage (HV) power cables the school needs. According to amendments submitted to Flintshire County Council’s planning department, the utilities provider said the original plans did not provide the three metre clearance required between the HV cables and the Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA) detailed in the plans.
As a result two MUGAs will be moved to make way. The double MUGA will shift 2.5 m from it’s original location while the single MUGA will be rotated to provide the space needed for the cabling.
This will have a knock-on effect on the layout of pathways and planting plus the position and ground levels of the proposed all-weather sports pitch and grass seed sports pitch.
An updated report on floodlight luminance states that these changes will not make light pollution for residents near the site any worse than the original plans.
With the main building complete, demolition has now begun on the original brutalist Argoed High School building.
The new school is a two-storey, 10,500m² building with space for up to 1,300 pupils.
It can offer nursery provision for up to 43 children and has 600 primary pupil places and 700 high school.
Secondary school pupils moved into the site in May, with primary pupils due to start there in September.
