PCSOs target unsafe parking outside Ysgol Penyffordd

PCSOs Dan and Charlotte carried out patrols outside Ysgol Penyffordd earlier this week following reports of unsafe and inconsiderate parking during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Officers said the main issues involve drivers stopping or parking on double yellow lines and zigzag markings directly outside the school gates, ignoring the “no stopping 8am–5pm” restrictions.

Police have warned that patrols will continue, and urged parents and carers to follow all parking rules to help keep children safe.

A South Flintshire Police spokesperson said: “We would urge anyone parking their vehicle whilst attending the school to adhere to all the parking restrictions that are in place. They are there to ensure everyone stays safe.”

The yellow zigzag markings outside schools are designed to prevent vehicles from waiting or parking in areas where visibility for children and pedestrians is most at risk.
Some are supported by roadside signs setting out specific times when restrictions apply, typically during school hours.

Drivers can face fines for parking or stopping in restricted areas, with enforcement carried out by local councils or, where civil powers are not in place, by police traffic officers.

Safety advice for parents:

  • Allow extra time for drop-off and pick-up periods.
  • Never park on yellow zigzags or double yellow lines.
  • Avoid parking opposite school entrances where possible.
  • Be considerate of local residents and avoid blocking driveways.

Parking restrictions outside schools are intended to keep sightlines clear and reduce risk to children crossing the road.

Police say they will continue to monitor the situation outside Ysgol Penyffordd in the coming weeks.
