Nestlé recalls SMA baby formula over toxin concerns
The Food Standards Agency confirmed the recall on 5 January 2026, advising parents not to feed affected products to babies.
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus and is highly heat stable, meaning it is not destroyed by boiling or during formula preparation.
Symptoms of exposure include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
The recall affects a wide range of SMA products across different pack sizes and best before dates, including SMA Advanced, SMA First Infant Milk, SMA Comfort, SMA Anti Reflux, SMA Alfamino, SMA Little Steps and SMA Lactose Free.
Nestlé said it had taken the step as a precaution and that point of sale notices are being displayed in affected retail outlets explaining the recall.
Parents are advised to check packaging carefully. Anyone with an affected batch should stop using the product immediately and contact Nestlé for a refund. Products can be verified via nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or by calling the careline on 0800 0 81 81 80.
If a baby has consumed any of the recalled products and shows signs of illness, medical advice should be sought through a GP or by calling NHS 111.
