Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami has praised young people supporting the Anthony Nolan charity and helping to recruit potential lifesavers to the stem cell register.

Sir Mark attended an event in Westminster to hear how young volunteers are raising awareness in schools and encouraging others to join the register, which helps patients in need of stem cell transplants.

He is now calling on more people in Alyn and Deeside, particularly those aged 16 to 30 and from minority ethnic backgrounds, to register as stem cell donors.

Research shows that younger donors increase the chances of a successful transplant, and people from minority ethnic backgrounds are less likely to find a matching donor due to rare tissue types.

Sir Mark said: “It’s inspiring to see young people in my constituency stepping up to support Anthony Nolan by raising awareness of the stem cell register and signing up themselves. This gives hope to those in desperate need of a stem cell transplant. By joining the register, you could literally save someone’s life.

“This is a cause very close to my heart, especially since my son Max received a life-saving stem cell transplant when he had leukaemia as a child.”

Anthony Nolan works with schools, colleges and universities to promote awareness and register donors. Young volunteers play a key role in diversifying and strengthening the register.

People can join the Anthony Nolan stem cell register if they are aged 16 to 30, live in the UK, and are in good health. More information is available at anthonynolan.org/join.
